Dollar Tree Bins

Monday, December 31, 2012

Some great bins I found at the dollar tree - they are loaded up with all sorts of colors.  There were lots of plastic baskets as well -

Happy Organizing <3

I took this cold & snowy day to create a "bill paying" binder.  You can find instructions and pictures  on the projects page.  One more day till we ring in 2013 - I can't wait!!!

Target $1.00 Magazine Holders

Saturday, December 29, 2012

Found a great deal on magazine bins today at Target for $1.00.  Who doesn't love the dollar section as Target?

Deal of the Day!  I went to Staples with 3 - 40% off coupons for Martha Stewart Office Products from Avery.  Coupons said, "one coupon per product" and they took all three :-).  I especially like the binder because you can fold it over like a portfolio as well as it opens completely flat so it is easier to write in it.  I will use this as my personal planner for 2013 - calendar has much more space than the smaller ones I usually use and that's a big plus for me!

Since I am on vacation I have been trying to organize my blog - running into some difficulties trying to make a picture gallery as well as add a pin-it button on here.  Taking a break from the blog, I have decided to take down the Christmas tree and now I will have to deal with the 16 inches of snow we got last night.  Pictures to follow, when I get brave enough to venture outside :-)

Today I made two "Movie Theater" Gift Baskets for Holiday Gifts.... Very easy to do - I purchased the "popcorn" container from the Dollar Tree as well as most of the candy, basket bags, shredded paper, tissue paper, and styrofoam to hold the candy on the dowels.  The dowels and popcorn I purchased from Walmart and also included a gift certificate to Regal Movie Theaters.  Instead of a movie gift card you can replace with a DVD for a family gift.

Directions:

Place tissue paper so it hangs over the side of container.
Then place styrofoam rectangle into the container - cut with a knife to fit to size.
Hot glue candy to the dowel (I used clear scotch tape as well to hold in place)
Arrange candy on dowels in the container.
Next add loose popcorn bags to fill in the container.
Add some crumpled up tissue paper to hold styrofoam in place.
Spread shredded paper in the container.
Put container into the basket bag and add a bow.

Happy Holidays!!

One holiday down and now it's time to head back to school.  I guess it's time to get ready for the hustle and bustle.  I did manage to decorate my living room at least today. It's time I start to think about my organizing challenges for the new year.....

Homemade Vanilla Extract from Uganda

Saturday, November 24, 2012

Today I got into the Christmas Spirit by making Pure Vanilla Extract to give as gifts.    I purchased Organic Uganda Vanilla Beans, cheap vodka and Boston Round Bottles from the Speciality Bottle Company.  I was able to make 15 bottles of extract and have a handful of beans left over to make some vanilla sugar. The labels are from Martha Stewart's collection at Staples.

Recipe:
1/4 Pound Organic Uganda Vanilla Beans - purchased from Amadeusvanillabeans.com
15- 4 oz. Clear Boston Round Bottles & Caps specialitybottle.com
1.75 oz. Bottle of Bellows Vodka
Martha Stewart Brown Craft Labels Item #72428

I used 2 Vanilla Beans for each 4 ounce bottle. (With a sharp knife slice the vanilla bean in half - then I cut them in half again and placed in each bottle.  Fill the bottle with vodka and let sit for 8 weeks in a cool dark place. Tie with a pretty bow and give as gifts.  If you give gifts away before the 8 weeks attach a note telling the recipient what date they can begin using their extract.

When jar is half empty just refill with more vodka, you will always have a supply of Pure Vanilla Extract on hand.

Linen Closet Shelf Liner

Sunday, October 14, 2012

I found Contact Shelf Liner - big roll $9.00 at Target that matched the print on the liners in my baskets. Putting the new paper on was easy, but removing the old liner was a bit of a challenge :-)  I'm glad it's done.

Organizing CDs

Finally tackled a project I've been dreading - organizing my CD collection.  I searched all over the Internet to come up with an idea on a practical way to organize them as well as saving space.  My solution:  took all my CDs out of their jewel cases and put them into Memorex's Clear CD & DVD Keepers ($10.99 from Staples-Walmart & Target only had the colored ones) .  I started out with the colored ones, but it was hard to read the covers of the CDs so I think I may use them for my DVDs instead.  I took the inserts from the CDs slipped them in the plastic sleeve, added the CD, and then trimmed the back cover from the CD to fit into the plastic sleeve.  I added Post-It note Labels (printed the A-B-C's off of my label maker) and attached to a CD.  You wouldn't believe how much space you actually save by doing this!  After all CDs were in their sleeves, I put them in alphabetical order by artist (I didn't go to the extreme to alphabetize them under each "letter".  I am ok with flipping through them for now.  If my collection grows larger, then I may break it down even further.  I purchased 2 lined baskets from Target ($6.99 each) and have one filled and about 1/4 of the other and that is with 100 CDs.  I still have more floating around my house & car and will put them in their appropriate place :-)

In-between trying to get my classroom together for the new school year and trying to get as much done on my "to do" list - I've done a bit more organizing in the house.  Today's project was the dreaded linen closet - which is on the main living level of the house and I do not keep any linen's in it!  I went through and added some lazy Susan's to house all the stuff I use to get ready for work - so far it seems to make much more sense, now maybe I won't be knocking things over every time I reach for something :-)

I have to say it's been quite the challenge trying to organize with my 5 month old collie puppy - he seems to like to steal everything!!

Sunday, August 19, 2012

I've spent the past few days scouring the internet for sites on organizing!  There are some really good ideas, and some a bit over-the-top as well.  I tamed my paperwork monster!  It feels good to finally go through all those boxes of papers I've saved for who knows what reasons!

I'm still working on the basement in small increments as to not get burned out, which I have a tendency to do.  I slowly starting gathering all the loose photographs and even ordered 2 containers from the container store - this will be my winter project, to go through and remove all photos from books which I never look out and all they do is take up space.  Maybe then I will actually do some scrapbooking :-)

Dollar Store Flip Flop Wreath

Monday, July 9, 2012

Today I did some crafting - was a bit bored and made a flipflop wreath.

Very easy project to do!

The flipflops were all purchased from the Dollar Tree (7 pairs).  They were arranged and hot glued onto a flat wooden wreath from Michael's.  The flower embellishments were also purchased at Michael's and hot glued onto the tops of the flipflops.  The trickiest part was getting the flipflops to line up correctly.  Total cost around $15.00.

Today's challenge ~ making a family management binder.  I waste too much time looking for things because I put them in a "safe place" but never can seem to find them when I need them.  Lots of wasted time is spent looking through stuff.  Searched the Internet for printables, but haven't found anything to fit my needs, most are for young familes,  so I guess I will design my own.

Landscaping Project

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Landscaping will be the project of the day - one flower bed has been overthrown with balloon flowers and grass for some reason - planning on digging it up and starting over for a minimal maintenance garden - pics to follow :-)

My task for today is the garage.  Lots of party stuff left over and junk from the kids who find it easy just to drop it there.  Want to get the car back in the garage it's been a couple of months :-)

Black & White Candy Buffet

Monday, June 25, 2012

Took a try at creating a candy buffet for my birthday party, I think it came out wonderfully and this may be a little side business I would like to get into.  I had a great time doing this....
It's been almost 5 months since I've been on here.  Had a few setbacks in what you would call life, some things are just not in our control.  I now have the time to focus on my organizing again since summer vacation officially begins today :-)

Just the beginning....

Monday, January 2, 2012

Last day of holiday break!  I did finish organizing the 6 drawers in my kitchen, you can't believe the amount of junk you can actually fit  into them.  Now my kitchen is a small galley style kitchen, so space is very limited. Since I am on a roll I decided to organize my cabinets as well.  Hoping to be able to check the kitchen off my list of 52 things to organize.  Even though it's a bit embarrassing I will post the before and after pictures of my junk drawer.  No task is considered too small!  Happy Organizing :-)

Off & Running

Sunday, January 1, 2012

I view organizational websites to get some tips to help with this organizational/de-cluttering process.  I found one site that has a challenge of getting rid of 10 things a week.  Although I find that a bit extreme, I think I will try to de-clutter and try to get rid of 5 things a week. I really need to have a donation bin ready to go at all times.  I have tried the whole garage sale route, but to me it prolongs keeping the clutter to only make a minimal profit.  I prefer to give items away to people that can use them.  I would like to also start selling some of the better items, (i.e. Hess trucks, Disney Lithographs, etc on Ebay or Craig's list).

I do have some major projects that I would like to accomplish such as the basement & garage, but for now I am content with picking one room and putting it into smaller tasks so that I don't feel overwhelmed.  My first mission of the New Year is the kitchen.  Today I am beginning with the junk drawer, seems like I have three and I plan to cut that down to just one. The kitchen seems to be where I spend most of my time so to make life a bit easier (not having food containers falling out at me every time I open the cabinet would be so nice). So on this 1st day of January I will begin with my junk drawers :-)

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!  40 years of watching Dick Clark - where has the time gone?  This year I vow to stick to my resolutions as much as possible.  I am making lists of what I want to get accomplished in the house.  As I said, every year I try to organize my life, but this year I am gonna do it!  :-)
